When Papaw Duck passed away, we didn’t want to take you away from the only home you had ever known. So I moved in—fixing things up, taking care of the house, and taking care of you. To say you were confused at first would be an understatement. You paced the house and growled, not understanding where your main human had gone.

I started school, and you quickly learned that I was the one letting you outside every morning and every evening. We thought that after Papaw Duck passed, you wouldn’t be far behind him. Never in a million years did we imagine you’d stay as long as you did.

Never in a million years did I think I’d be feeding you oatmeal cream pies every day for your “afternoon treat,” just like Papaw did. Three years of you acting like a puppy, despite how ancient you are. Three years of you by my side while I figured out my career. Three years of The Buddy and Friends Show. Three years of you being my Buddy.

Thank you for choosing me when you were hurting, and for staying when you didn’t have to. Losing you feels like losing another piece of Papaw all over again. The grief is deep because the love was deeper. Loving you changed me, and missing you will stay with me. ”
