Maverick

d. April 22, 2024

Maverick entered our lives when we least expected it in 2013. He was a stray skinny dog who wanted food and water as he traversed a cold winter. He made his own rules, coming and going as he please always wanting to gallivant to the newest territory and return on his clock. He had a manly tough boy bark! He was street smart and a survivor. We had given up on him becoming our dog till the Spring of 2014. We had not seen him much and he showed up again on the day of a move from Greenbrier, Arkansas. It was a sign God gave us one more jaunt with him, he was ready to be ours and his pom pom years perked up and he jumped in our dually as we pulled out from our rental farm. This little black dog that would never let us pick him up but suddenly was ready to be family. This was the start of his absolute love of getting in the truck, on his own. He loved to go for rides and get a hamburger. Previous attempts to neighbors never turned up anyone who knew him. So, aptly, we named him Maverick as anytime you call him, he would do just like Tom Cruise in Top Gun and do his own fly by around by Laura's house until he was ready to come back. He would then howl/bark until you let him in a door. He was always so vocal. Rules didn’t apply to him because he was the King of his world. For years we loved and cared for him. Always making sure that we didn’t leash him up since he wanted to be free. If we called him to go inside, he wouldn’t return. We had to let him explore and be independent. If we wanted to snuggle it was only if he wanted to. He lost a sister named Josey (Boston Terrier) while we were in Hot Springs and his grief was apparent.  For a little while he was alone and became the center of attention. Faking a leg injury for the rest of his life, our little boy would always be cared for even if we all knew it wasn’t real. During the last three years, his sight was declining but he always found the back door even if he couldn't see the treats sitting at his feet. He really loved snuggles with Roux (Frenchie) and Momma Kitty's barn food was his favorite sneak treat. He was the most competitive with Jackson as they played fetch with tennis balls and he never gave up even when he got rolled up. He was a fierce competitor. Galloping and stealing toys from other dogs will consume his time now. In Heaven he has all the space to roam and explore without the constrictions of everyday life. Mavericks' personality will be missed, and his courage will inspire all of us to enjoy the time we have with our four-legged critters. We love and miss you Maverick, go roam freely. The pasture and fence rows are yours forever now.
Love,
Carson & Nikol Hamilton
