April 9, 2026—I got the call that would change my life. The call that brought you into my world and reminded me just how much I had missed having a Great Dane in my life.

On April 10th, we met for the very first time, and from that moment, it was instant love. Over the next few months, you went through your surgeries with such strength. You met your brothers and sisters, won over the hearts of so many people, and reminded everyone what unconditional love looked like. You grew from 92 pounds to 123 pounds, and it was incredible watching you finally enjoy life. You played, you slobbered on everyone, and you filled our home with laughter.

Then one day, something changed.

A switch seemed to flip, and for reasons I’ll never fully understand, a side of you appeared that none of us had ever seen. I searched for answers. I made excuses because I didn’t want to believe it. Things would settle, and you’d be your sweet, loving self again… until another trigger would happen. Then this morning, it happened for the third time.

I cried. I made phone calls. I reached out to veterinarians, experienced rescuers, and anyone I thought might have an answer. I desperately tried to figure out how, why, or where you could go. But the heartbreaking reality was that passing you to someone else wouldn’t have been fair to you—or safe for anyone else. I couldn’t live with the possibility of you seriously hurting someone because I refused to make the hardest decision.

The day I brought you home, I made you a promise: that you would never know suffering or pain again. Today, I kept that promise, even though it shattered my heart.

You left this world surrounded by love. You knew kindness. You knew safety. You knew what it felt like to be wanted, cherished, and loved until your very last breath.

Rufus, I will forever question the “why,” but I will never question how deeply I loved you. Thank you for every slobbery kiss, every goofy moment, every memory, and every piece of your heart that you gave me.

Run wild, baby boy. Be free. Until we meet again, know that you will never, ever be forgotten.

Sometimes the greatest act of love is making the decision that breaks your own heart. 💙🐾
